Welcome to the September 2025 edition of our monthly FinOps feature roundup. Each month, we share the latest Ternary innovations designed to improve cloud cost transparency, boost efficiency, and strengthen collaboration across teams.

In August, we released user experience improvements in the Ternary Reporting Engine and forecasting, along with three new explainer videos to help you get even more out of the platform. In the September 2025 FinOps roundup, we’re excited to introduce hierarchical budgets, new forecasting filters, and enhancements to MSP Customer Management. As a bonus, we have released a new Ternary in 90 Seconds or Less video for MSPs.

Read on to see how our latest enhancements enable customers to maximize the value of their cloud investments and help partners scale their FinOps services.

Introducing Hierarchical Budgets

Managing cloud costs can feel overwhelming when every team, application, and provider has different spending patterns. FinOps practitioners need more control and visibility, not just at the top-level budget, but across all the groups that make up their cloud environment. That is why we are excited to introduce hierarchical budgets in Ternary.

In addition to recurring or variable monthly budgets, you can now break down a total budget into scoped amounts by provider, application, or any grouping that matters to your business. The result is that FinOps practitioners can hold teams accountable with budgets tailored to their needs while still keeping everything aligned to an overall financial plan.

For partners delivering FinOps as a service, you can see exactly where spending is distributed and offer more targeted recommendations to your clients.

The biggest advantage is visibility. With real-time insights into actual and projected spending for each level, you can quickly identify trends, spot risks, and make adjustments before costs get out of hand. Hierarchical budgets give you the precision you need to improve cloud cost management and the confidence to keep spending aligned with business priorities.

New forecasting filters

Accurate forecasting is one of the most powerful ways to take control of cloud spend, which is why we continue to enhance Ternary Forecasting. You can now apply filters for even greater precision, in addition to the existing options that refine forecasts by provider, groupings, measures, date granularity, and lookback or lookahead ranges. When filters are enabled, a right-hand panel makes it easy to search for and select dimension values. This allows you to narrow the scope of your forecast to exactly the areas you want to analyze.

The benefits are clear. Customers gain more precise forecasts, focusing projections on the dimensions that drive their spending. Both customers and partners can improve scenario planning. They can run what-if analyses across cloud cost segments to better support budgeting discussions.

Overall, Ternary’s new forecasting filters help you make faster decisions by surfacing the most relevant forecast data without extra manual filtering or external post-processing.

Enhancements to MSP Customer Management

Earlier this year, we introduced enhancements to MSP Customer Management settings. Key updates included the ability to customize settings on a per-tenant basis and support for custom settings that automatically apply to newly created child tenants.

In September, we expanded those capabilities even further. MSPs can now allow, disallow, or inherit metrics from cloud integrations. Additionally, they can enable child tenants to inherit rate and usage recommendations from their parent organization. By default, metrics and recommendations are collected from the child tenant, but when you select “inherit,” they are collected directly from the MSP parent.

These enhancements give MSPs greater flexibility in tailoring platform behavior across their customer base while ensuring consistency and efficiency where it matters most.

New video: Ternary MSP Dashboard in 90 seconds or less

Our Ternary in 90 Seconds or Less video series continues with a new partner-focused episode.

In this video, Bob Kilbride, Head of Channel and Alliances at Ternary, walks through the Ternary MSP Dashboard, designed to help partners deliver more value with less effort. The Ternary MSP Dashboard gives you comprehensive summaries across all child tenants managed within Ternary. It’s organized into five tabular views: reporting, anomalies, savings, integrations, and user access. Watch the video to learn more.
