Close to 800 people attended last week’s 2024 FinOps X Europe conference, held in Barcelona. Ternary proudly supported the conference, as a digital sponsor.

At the W hotel (where the conference took place, November 11–14), the Ternary team was unmistakable, sporting signature black-and-white track jackets. From keynotes to breakouts, we greeted old friends and met with partners and industry analysts to discuss the evolving FinOps landscape and what sets our multi-cloud FinOps platform above the rest. Read on to discover our 3 key FinOps X Europe takeaways.

1. FinOps scopes are expanding to include SaaS

The FinOps Foundation defines a FinOps Scope as “a segment of technology-related spending to which FinOps practitioners apply FinOps concepts.” One topic of avid discussion at FinOps X Europe was how FinOps teams are being asked to expand their responsibilities beyond public cloud infrastructure. Areas of potential expansion include SaaS license management (from optimizing SaaS licenses to calculating total cost of ownership). The FinOps Foundation’s J.R. Storment devoted his keynote to the continually changing responsibilities of FinOps practitioners and how the foundation is expanding FinOps Scopes.

As companies consider expanding areas for which FinOps teams have responsibility, the role of the FinOps Cost and Usage Specification (FOCUS™) comes into play. FOCUS is an open-source specification that normalizes billing data across clouds. Implementing FOCUS, companies can “compare apples to apples” when assessing their cloud investments. (Read more about how Ternary has implemented FOCUS in our platform and is collaborating on its ongoing development.)

In 2023, the FinOps Foundation released FOCUS 1.0. FinOps X Europe 2024 saw the announcement of FOCUS 1.1, which includes additional detail for subcategories as well as for commitment discounts. Looking ahead, the FinOps Foundation is developing FOCUS 1.2, which will include the addition of SaaS licensing.

2. In a crowded field, only Ternary offers a purpose-built MSP solution

Ternary was among over a dozen FinOps X Europe sponsors that fall squarely in the category of providing cloud cost management through FinOps. In our team’s many meetings with attending representatives from managed service providers (MSPs) and cloud service providers (CSPs), one question came up most often: How do you differentiate yourselves in such a crowded space?

The answer is clear: Ternary is the only vendor offering a purpose-built MSP solution and an MSP-first strategy. Ternary’s multi-cloud and multi-tenant MSP platform enables MSPs, systems integrators (SIs), and cloud resellers to deliver their services better and more efficiently than ever before. The Ternary MSP Partner Program is structured for joint success, and the vast majority of Ternary users are getting access to the platform from an MSP partner.  Read more about why Ternary is the leading FinOps solution for MSPs.

3. Many FinOps platforms claim multi-cloud capabilities. Ternary delivers.

Attendees named a range of CSPs they use to serve their business needs besides AWS, from Azure and Google Cloud (GCP) to Alibaba. Nowadays, being multi-cloud is table stakes for companies offering FinOps platforms. But while many companies claim to be multi-cloud, few provide more than cursory features for clouds beyond AWS.

Initially founded to serve GCP customers, Ternary brought a perspective that went beyond AWS right from the start. Today, we are the leading FinOps platform for GCP as well as the leading FinOps platform for Azure, offering true feature parity across all major clouds. This feature parity positions us best to serve customers who will increasingly use services from more than one CSP. These customers will need more than cursory support for clouds beyond AWS.

We also offer robust support for Snowflake, so that customers can gain visibility into, and control over, their comprehensive cloud spend.
